My Grocery Store Essentials: A Healthy, High-Protein Grocery List

The foods I love keeping stocked for easy meals, busy weeks, and feeling my best.

If there’s one thing college has taught me, it’s that having the right groceries on hand makes taking care of yourself SO much easier.

Between classes, Golden Girls practices, workouts, social plans, and everything else on my calendar, I don’t always have time to cook an elaborate meal. But I still want to eat foods that taste amazing, fuel my body, and keep me feeling energized throughout the day.

That’s why I’ve learned to keep my grocery routine simple.

Instead of buying a bunch of random ingredients and hoping I figure out what to make, I focus on versatile foods I can use in multiple meals throughout the week.

Today I’m sharing my healthy grocery store essentials, including my favorite types of protein, carbs, fruits, veggies, snacks, and gluten-free staples.

Let’s go grocery shopping!

1. Protein: The Foundation of My Grocery Cart

As a college dancer, protein is something I try to include throughout my day. It helps support muscle recovery and makes it easier to build satisfying meals around my busy schedule.

Some of my favorite protein staples include:

Chicken breast or chicken tenderloins
Lean ground turkey or ground beef
Eggs
Plain Greek yogurt
Cottage cheese
Salmon and shrimp
Protein powder for convenient smoothies

My tip: Choose two or three proteins you can prepare in different ways throughout the week.

For example, chicken can become a rice bowl, salad, wrap, or quick dinner with roasted potatoes.

You don’t need a completely different protein for every meal. Keep it simple!

2. Carbs: Fuel for My Busy Days

Let’s talk carbs, because they deserve a spot in your grocery cart!

With long practices, workouts, and a busy schedule, carbohydrates are an important source of energy.

I love having a mix of easy-to-prepare options that I can pair with protein and produce.

My go-to carbohydrate staples include:

Jasmine or brown rice
White and sweet potatoes
Certified gluten-free oats
Gluten-free pasta
Gluten-free bread or tortillas
Rice cakes
Bananas and other fresh fruit

My tip: Keep a few quick options like microwaveable rice or frozen potatoes on hand for the nights when you’re running from one thing to the next.

Convenience can be a game changer!

3. Fruits & Veggies: Keep It Colorful

I love making my meals colorful, and fresh produce is one of the easiest ways to add variety, fiber, vitamins, and flavor.

Some of my favorites to shop for include:

Fruits

Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries
Bananas
Apples
Grapes
Lemons and limes

Vegetables

Spinach and romaine
Cucumbers
Cherry tomatoes
Broccoli
Zucchini
Carrots
Avocados

I also love keeping frozen fruits and vegetables available because they last longer and make putting together a meal so easy.

My tip: Don’t feel like everything needs to be fresh. Frozen produce is nutritious, convenient, and can help reduce food waste.

4. Healthy Fats & Flavor Essentials

Healthy meals should taste GOOD!

These are the ingredients that help me turn simple proteins, carbs, and vegetables into something I’m actually excited to eat.

My favorite staples include:

Avocados
Olive oil
Natural peanut butter
Nuts and seeds
Shredded or sliced cheese
Salsa and pico de gallo
Lemons and limes
Garlic, herbs, and seasonings
Favorite sauces and dressings

I love mixing and matching flavors so I can use similar ingredients without feeling like I’m eating the same meal every day.

5. Snacks I Love Keeping Around

Between classes, dance, and everything else, having easy snacks available is a MUST.

I like keeping options that are convenient to grab and satisfying enough to get me through my next activity.

Some of my favorite snack ideas include:

Greek yogurt with berries and granola
Rice cakes with peanut butter and banana
Cottage cheese with fruit
Cheese and gluten-free crackers
Hard-boiled eggs
Protein smoothies
Apples with peanut butter
Popcorn or a favorite crunchy snack

And yes, I absolutely keep fun foods and sweet treats around too!

Healthy living isn’t about eliminating everything you love. It’s about finding a balance that works for you.

6. My Grocery Shopping Strategy

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that grocery shopping gets easier when you have a loose plan before you walk into the store.

Here’s how I like to approach it:

Step 1: Check what I already have.

I look through my fridge, freezer, and pantry so I’m not buying duplicates.

Step 2: Choose a few meals for the week.

I think about my schedule and decide which breakfasts, lunches, and dinners will be realistic.

Step 3: Build around versatile ingredients.

Instead of shopping for seven completely different dinners, I buy ingredients that work across multiple meals.

Step 4: Make room for convenience.

Prewashed greens, frozen produce, and microwaveable rice can make life so much easier.

Step 5: Leave room for flexibility.

College life changes quickly, so I don’t plan every single bite of food. I want options that make it easy to adapt.

7. My Gluten-Free Grocery Shopping Tips

  • I’ve always eaten gluten-free, so checking labels is second nature to me.
  • If you’re new to gluten-free grocery shopping, remember that foods like fruits, vegetables, eggs, plain rice, and unseasoned meats are naturally gluten-free.
  • For packaged foods, I always recommend checking labels carefully, especially on sauces, dressings, seasonings, oats, and snack products.
  • Look for gluten-free labeling when needed, and don’t assume a product is gluten-free just because it seems like it should be.
  • Your Grocery Cart Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
  • One thing I really want you to remember is that eating well doesn’t require buying every trendy wellness product or having a perfectly stocked fridge.
  • Start with a few foods you genuinely enjoy.
  • Find meals that work with your schedule.
  • Learn what helps you feel your best, and build from there.

That’s exactly what I had to do when I moved to college and realized my old routines weren’t going to work for my new lifestyle.

I learned that being prepared wasn’t about being restrictive. It was about giving myself the tools to show up for everything I loved.

And that little shift made such a difference.
